How to get your first work permit?
Two main paths in the general regime depending on whether you are going to work for someone or on your own:
Employee (Cuenta Ajena)
Working for a company or employer. The company initiates the process.

Self-employed (Cuenta Propia)
For entrepreneurs and freelancers. You need a solid Business Plan.

From the contract to the card (TIE)
Initial application
The company submits it to Immigration (or you at the consulate if you are self-employed).
The Visa
You pick up your visa in your home country to enter Spain legally.
Soc. Sec. Registration
3 months to start working and get registered. Without registration, the permit loses validity.
Your card (TIE)
Appointment for fingerprints and in a month you will have your foreigner identity card.

Your first permit has a duration of 1 year. But what has improved with the new 2025 law?
If you have a permit to work in a company (employee), the new regulation allows you to carry out activities on your own (self-employed) at the same time, without needing extra paperwork.
Renewals for 4 years!
4 years of validity
Upon renewing your first year, the new card will be directly for 4 years.
Total freedom
With this renewal you can now work anywhere in Spain and in any profession.
Positive Silence
If the administration takes more than 3 months to respond, your renewal is automatically understood as granted.
